For centuries, the rose has been the universal symbol of love. Beautiful petals amidst the thorns—the rose is a balanced representation of the beauty and joy of loving someone and the inherent possibility of pain and loss. It also represents the enduring power of love despite hardships.

Different colors of roses express distinct messages of love. The red rose, the lover’s rose, symbolizes love and passion and is used to convey the precious three words: “I love you.” White roses represent innocent or pure love and conveys the message “I am worthy of you” or “You are heavenly”. Pink roses symbolize grace, gentility and sweet thoughts and are used to express admiration, appreciation and gratitude.

In ancient times, yellow roses meant jealousy, but today it signifies friendship, joy and the promise of new beginning. Yellow roses are usually given to friends and loved ones to brighten up their day or to congratulate them during special occasions.

Purple or lavender roses symbolize enchantment and are used to express “love at first sight”. Orange roses represent passionate desire, enthusiasm and fascination and convey one’s desire to pursue a new relationship or endeavor.

The number of roses given may also express a specific sentiment. 1 rose means “love at first sight” or “You are the one”. 2 roses mean “mutual love” or “deeply in love with one another”. 3 roses, of course, means “I love you”. 7 roses (most applicable to married couples) mean “together forever”. 10 roses represent perfection and expresses the message “You are perfect”, while 12 roses are the standard for “Be mine”. You can also apologize to your loved one with 15 roses, which mean “I am truly sorry, please forgive me”.

===

Enjoy the special taste of Chicken Inasal and other Filipino dishes at the J. Lo’s Inasal!

Owned by Ms. Jacky Lo, a pure Pinay who originated from the City of Smiles, JLo’s Inasal started in a branch located at the Maguinhawa St. in UP Village, Quezon City on August 8, 2008. Slowly it turned into an even more popular restaurant that made them expand to several branches in the country.

The restaurant is positioned at the hi-way of the village, which made them visible to the entire passersby. They have fully air-conditioned room that has an area for the smokers and non-smokers. Walls are painted in bright yellow, while the ceiling is furnished with a native “banig” design. The Masks or “Mascara’s” are displayed in the walls of their bistro as a sign of their tradition called the Bacolod Mascara Festival.

J. Lo’s Inasal offers a wide variety of foods like Chicken Inasal (Roasted Chicken), Grilled Pork, Grilled & Sizzling Seafood, Pancit, Soups and Vegetables. I have tasted three of their best sellers which are the Kansi, Liempo, and the Chicken Inasal Pecho (Roasted Chicken Breast). They also serve Kansi, a spicy mix of the tastes of Bulalo & Sinigang that is a very popular dish from Bacolod City, and their version of liempo, which is sweeter and thinner than the common ones in other restaurants. Finally, their Chicken Inasal Pecho (Roasted Chicken Breast) has an extraordinary taste to offer at P88.

JLo’s Inasal also provides 3 different special sauces for their chicken: vinegar, soy cause and chicken oil, which is mixed with achuete, giving it a surprising taste. It also goes well with soy sauce, calamansi and chili for a spicier experience.

JLo’s Inasal is open from 11:00AM – 2:00AM everyday. Free food delivery services within the area are accepted with the minimum rate of P150. They also accept party reservations & caterings in all their branches.

Over the years, people from all over the world have held on to the tradition of celebrating the New Year as an opportunity for new beginnings. After reflecting on things that have happened the previous year, they make resolutions to change bad habits and improve themselves to have a better year ahead.

According to 43things.com, below are some the most popular New Year’s Resolutions for 2011.

1. Lose weight
2. Be happy
3. Save money
4. Fall in love
5. Get a job
6. Read more
7. Quit Smoking
8. Run a marathon
9. Eat, drink, learn, or try something new
10. Move out

Celebrities and other famous personalities are not excluded from this custom. According to an interview by GMA News, President Noynoy Aquino himself has a resolution: to be more fit. “Kung meron pang paraan na madagdagan pa ang ginagawa natin, sana mahanap natin ang lakas para magawa yun. To that extent magkakaroon na tayo ng exercise regimen rin na mas sa regular, I’m taking up biking,” he said.

Of course, it takes more than simply listing down our resolutions to accomplish our desired changes; it takes perseverance and commitment. Lia Steakly Dicker, editor of the 43 Things Book: Dream It. List It. Do It. How to live a Bigger & Bolder Life gave some tips on how to make resolutions that you can easily stick with.

1. Be deliberate – Resist the urge to impulsively make pledges for the upcoming year based on what’s bothering you at a specific moment. Spend a week, or longer, evaluating your priorities for the new year and think about how your resolution fits with these objectives. This is a great conversation to have with a friend, “Could you see me doing this goal, this year?”.

2. Leave the past behind – Refrain from adopting old resolutions to prevent past regrets from following you into the future. Instead, redefine failed goals. If “lose weight” didn’t work last year, consider the new approaches of “eat healthier” or “exercise five days a week”.

3. Stay positive – Swearing off bad habits such as “I will never bite my nails again” only emphasizes the forbidden behavior. For better results, cast resolutions in a flattering light and vow to “Take better care of my hands and nails”.

4. Shorten the deadline – Recent research found 80 percent of people don’t keep their resolution past Valentine’s Day. Maintain yours until July 1 and you will have accomplished more than most. We’re betting the buzz you get from successfully making reaching the six-month mark will carry you the rest of the year.

5. Define the obstacles – Acknowledging and preparing for the challenges upfront allows you to better navigate bumps in the road ahead.

6. Go public with your plans – Telling others about your goals helps you in a couple of ways. Writing the goals down and sharing them with others can increase your sense of responsibility to meet your objectives. It also gives others insight into what you are trying to accomplish and opens new doors for support.

In spite of problems, calamities, controversies and everyday struggles all year-round, no one celebrates the New Year more enthusiastically than Filipinos. As one of the happiest people in the world, we are ready to forget our troubles for a while and meet the coming year with hope, optimism and merry making born out of the unique traditions that had endured even in these modern times.

Filipinos literally starts the year with a bang! In spite of government warnings and bans due to injuries, accidents and, sometimes, even death year after year, the tradition of lighting up firecrackers and fireworks still remains. Behind this is the belief that the noise, the light and smoke will drive bad luck and evil spirits away. The choices run from ear-splitting and dangerous favorites like lebentador (rebentador or labintador – an innocent-looking small triangle filled with powder that gives a very loud bang that can cause the loss of limbs), Sinturon ni Hudas (Judas Belt – imagine a long belt filled with hundreds of those lebentador-like things), Sawa (Snake – imagine a longer Judas Belt, with almost thousands of rounds), Super Lolo, Pla-Pla, Whistle Bomb, Baby Rocket, to things that are supposed to simply give out light lights and smoke like lusis (sparkler), roman candle and fountain. There is also watusi, a small firecracker that children like to rub against rough surfaces and release to make it crackle.

Those who don’t want to brave the dangers of firecrackers or fireworks are content to make noises another way. Torotot or toy trumpets/horns have been revised and improved over the years but remain to be a staple favorite for New Year noise-making. They are traditionally made from cardboard and plastic and decorated with colorful foil, paper or feathers.

Other alternatives are hitting pots and pans, blowing on whistles, honking the car horn, playing music at top volume or just about anything that can make a lot of noise. Also behind this tradition is the belief that the noise drives evil spirits out of the house.

Filipinos also believe that all doors and windows must be open during the transition of the year so the bad luck and evil spirits that are being driven away by all the noise will leave the house for sure and good graces and luck will come in. However, this is often deemed impractical due to the smoke from the firecrackers filling the house and affecting people with asthma and, worse, the possibility of stray firecrackers or illegal gun bullets getting inside as well.

Media Noche, a dinner/feast partaken on the eve of December 31st, is the New Year counterpart of Christmas’ Noche Buena. But the most notable features of Media Noche are the 13 (12 for some) round fruits. 13 is a lucky number in the Chinese tradition and the round shape is a symbol for coins (i.e., money and prosperity). For some, the number 12 symbolizes the 12 months of the coming year, ensuring prosperity for each month.

Other traditions include putting of coins inside your pockets on New Year’s eve so you will be prosperous for the whole year; wearing polka-dotted clothes because the round shape symbolizes coins or money; and jumping high 12 times when the clock strikes 12 so you will grow taller.
