5,212 A(H1N1) cases hit Philippines

There were 5,212 A(H1N1) influenza cases monitored in the country, resulting to 30 deaths, according to Health Secretary Francisco Duque III.

Signal No. 3 in 4 areas

Yesterday, PAGASA raised the Signal No. 3 storm warning over over the Batanes group of islands, Cagayan, Calayan, and the Babuyan Islands, as typhoon “Ramil” moves closer to northern Luzon. Signal no. 2 was raised over Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, Apayao, Abra, Kalinga, Isabela, Mountain Province, Ifugao, Benguet and La Union.
Signal no. 1 were the provinces of Pangasinan, Nueva Vizcaya, Quirino, Aurora, and northern Quezon (including Polillo Islands), Nueva Ecija, Tarlac and Zambales.

As of 5 p.m. yesterday, the eye of Ramil was spotted 455 kilometers east northeast of Aparri, Cagayan with maximum sustained winds of 175 kilometers per hour near center and gustiness of up to 210 kph.

Basketball player Arboleda suspended

Wynne Arboleda, Burger King veteran guard, was suspended and banned for the rest of the season 2009-2010 for attacking a rude fan at courtside last friday. He stands to lose about P2.73 million in income. He first kicked Katigbak, the fan, and threw several punches before he was restrained.

Voter's registration hours extended

The hours for voters’ registration nationwide will be extended starting thursday, Oct. 22 until month end to accommodate last minute registrants.

According to Comelec spokesman James Jimenez, registration from October 22 to 30 will be from 8 a.m. up to 9 p.m. And on the registration deadline, they will be accommodated from 8 a.m. to 12 midnight.

Update: Killed Suspect in Greenbelt Robbery Has Been Identified by the Police

The killed suspect in the Greenbelt 5 robbery has been identified by the Police last Monday evening. It was said in a text message by Sr. Sup. Leonardo Espina, spokesperson of PNP, that the dead suspect is Armando Manangan Domingo. A 32-year old who was reportedly from San Mariano, Isabela.

Rolex Store Robbery in Greenbelt 5

Six men posed as bomb squad agents broke into the Greenbelt 5 mall to rob the Rolex store last Sunday, Oct 18. Greenbelt 5 is a posh shopping mall located in Makati .

One of the 6 suspects was shot dead while the 5 robbers escaped after a shoot-out with two police escorts of Taguig Mayor Freddie Tinga.

5.3 Magnitude Quake jolts Philippines

Philvolcs reported an earthquake of 5.3 magnitude that rocked southern and Central Luzon and parts of Metro Manila Monday. It occured around 7:50am Monday Oct. 19, with the epicenter estimated at 61 kilometers northwest of Mamburao, Occidental Mindoro, at a depth of 132 km. The quake was felt at Intensity 4 in Looc and Lubang, Mindoro Occidental; Intensity 3 in Batangas City; Iba, Zambales; and Clark, Pampanga; and Intensity 2 in the cities of Manila, Makati, Pasay, Pasig, Muntinlupa, Mandaluyong, Calamba, Talisay and Cavite.

Leptospirosis kills 89

Health Secretary Francisco Duque said that 89 of 1,027 persons afflicted and confined in 15 hospitals had died of Leptospirosis, a severe illness now being contracted by an increasing number of people in Metro Manila and Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon). There is now an outbreak in Barangays Tumana, Concepcion and Malanday in Marikina City.

Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease characterized by a skin rash and flu-like symptoms; caused by a bacterium excreted by rodents, resulting in liver and/or kidney failure.

Duque said the DOH would be providing prophylaxis treatment to affected areas in Mariikina and other areas this weekend.
